Cooper is a career soldier, mostly because that's what he's best at. He's good at thinking on his feet, at being prepared, at looking at a situation and finding the loopholes and weak points and such. He takes orders well, when he can see the logic in them, but if he has an objection...

He won't incite mutiny or insurrection, but he won't obey an order he feels is morally incorrect, no matter what it costs him.

He's a fighter, not willing to die until he's explored every possible option and until every possible escape has been blocked off. Even then, he's the sort to fight to the death. When he feels like he can't win, he'll go all out, forget whatever consequences there might be, and attack. He went after Capt. Ryan after Capt. Ryan shot the dog he'd refused to shoot... because he'd already failed out of the Special Forces testing. That being said, he is good enough for the Special Forces; before he refused to shoot the dog, he was at the top of his class and had set something of a record in the test.

He's got a dry sense of humor, tending to play the surprising straightman if anything, but he's sharp enough and smiles easily. He can keep to business as well as any soldier, sure, but on his off time he's just another one of the boys. He does like to keep informed, though. When the boys are all chatting about things on a break during their march, he's the one who happens to know the local history. He likes knowing what he's heading into but, as said elsewhere, he can think on his feet and he will use anything he can when it comes to weapons or tools.

Fearless. Definitely fearless.
